In the east of Finnish Lapland, near the Russian border, lies Naruska. Beyond the sparsely populated village of Naruska, the road comes to an end at Tuntsa wilderness area. It’s where the North Salla Reindeer herders keep close to 5000 reindeer. Herding is the most traditional occupation in the north, and it keeps most people from leaving.
Salla is surrounded by the Europe’s largest wilderness area. Tourism and reindeer husbandry are the most significant industries in the Arctic region. The younger generation flees to bigger cities. After all, what is left to do in a town where the unemployment rate is more than 22%? -To be a herder, but it doesn’t make a living, you need to have another job or a rich wife.
